Al Shipman, 82, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2010 in Graham. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 8, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. in Morrison Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Al was born on March 28, 1928 in Memphis to the late Emrick Enlow and Vera Leona (Sturtevant) Shipman. He attended Texas A&M University and was a member of the Aggie Core. He left college upon the death of his father and went into business with his brother, Bart Shipman to help support their younger siblings. He married Dixie Joyce Maberry on August 18, 1951 in McCaulley, Texas. They moved to Graham in 1952 and began raising a family. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Firs Baptist Church.
His life work was in the oil and gas business where he founded the Iron Orchard and A.O. Shipman & Co. He was a true entrepreneur and loved the art of making a deal. His other passion was reading and studying the US economy thru newsletters, books, and television. If you knew Al, then you will remember that every conversation with him would include information regarding the next inflationary or recessionary period.
Al was full of words of wisdom which he would bestow on his family and friends. The euphemisms could be coined as A¢?oeShipanismsA¢?? which were a strong family trait dating back to his grand parents who were preachers. His final words of wisdom to all was A¢?oeI have lived a long and joyful life and made my peace with God. DonA¢?TMt cry because I am ready to rollA¢??
Among all these things, Al was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. He stated that every man leaves behind a monument, building, wall or plaque to be remembered his monument would be his children and grand children.
Survivors include: wife of 59 years, Dixie Shipman of Graham; daughters, Melody Delong and husband Allen of Graham, Tonya Bennitt and husband Ben of Lakeway, Texas, Kim Dyess and husband Richard of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Brittany Morgan, Caroline Bennitt, Elizabeth Eliot Dyess, Alex Bennitt, Jr., Walker Dyess, Jr., Mary Marshall Smith, and Caroline Crawford; sister, Carolyn Shipman White of Lubbock; Sister in-law and Brother in-law: Betsy and H.L. Mitchell of Graham, Edna and Smitty Maberry of Grand Prairie, Betty Maberry Douglas, and George Shipman. Nieces and Nephews: Michele and Robert Grimsley, Jr. of Graham, Diana Accinelli Tatro, Tom Accinelli, Teddi Accinelli, Laura Accinelli, John Accinelli, Mary Accinelli Greve, Kathleen Accinelli Kachelmeyer, Jim Accinelli, Claire Shipman, Susanna Shipman, Shandele Carpenter, Marilyn Shipman Cameron, Bart Shipman, Jr., Sonya Lee, Shala Freeman.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Bart and Morgan Shipman and sister, Inez Accinelli.
