June was born on February 16, 1932 in Henderson, Texas to the late S.V. and Lena Mae (Turner) Willingham. She married Billie Gene Edwards in 1951 in Bryson. He preceded her in death on February 25, 1969. June was a member of the First Baptist Church in Graham.
June truly loved the Lord, her family, and everything nature has to offer. She enjoyed everyday she was able to spend on her ranch at Possum Kingdom Lake. June throughout her life owned many animals, dogs, cats, horses, etc. She took care of them almost as they were her children. June enjoyed searching for unique rocks and anything else she might find in the outdoors. During her teenage years, June spent much time horseback as an avid barrel racer. She was runner-up during the 1949 sponsors barrel race at the Texas Cowboy Reunion in Stamford. She went on to do quite well at many other rodeos as well as being Rodeo Queen at the then Graham Rodeo. As a young girl, June made many trips with her family to Los Angeles and Hollywood, California. While there visiting her aunt Maxine, a writer for Photoplay Magazine, Maxine would take June to meet many Hollywood movie stars. June had her picture taken or received many autographed pictures from such stars as; Gene Autry, Shirley Temple, Robert Mitchum, Ann Miller, and many more. During June's first trip to Hollywood she felt very privileged to meet and have her picture taken with the very nice and friendly Toto, Judy Garland's dog from the Movie Wizard of Oz. This was part of the beginning of her great love for animals and people alike.
