Dennie Dee Covey, 74, passed away Friday, January 3, 2025 in Plano. Funeral service will be held Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at 1 p.m. in Oak Street Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Dennie was born October 9, 1950 in Lubbock to the late James Eugene and Marguerite Jane (Felts) Covey. He married Debbie Sumner July 25, 1970 in Lubbock.
A resident of Graham, Dennie Covey was a beloved family man, dedicated community member and passionate outdoorsman. He could out-fish anyone, a true fisherman at heart, and his love for the outdoors extended to golfing, camping, boating, and, of course, fishing. Dennie was a cherished member of several local churches in the 45 years in Graham. He served as a firefighter and Fire Chief for years, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to the safety and well-being of his community. The brotherhood within the fire department is unlike any other, where firefighters and their chiefs stand side by side, united not just by duty, but by a deep mutual respect and commitment to protect and serve their community, creating a family forged in courage and shared experiences. Dennie was proud of every single person he has ever fought fires next to and was honored to serve with each individual.
Family was everything to Dennie. He was a devoted husband to his high school sweetheart, Debbie, and together they shared 57 years of love and adventure, with 54 years of marriage. Even through both of their "stubborn attitudes" they knew their bond was unbreakable. He was a proud father and a doting grandfather, and his grandsons brought him great joy. He told them to stay in football, stay in baseball and not get lazy. Dennie especially treasured the time spent recently chatting with his nephew, Cole Sumner, whom he affectionately called his "buddy." Together, they shared many conversations about firefighting, as his nephew began his own firefighting journey.
Known for his generosity, humor, and caring spirit, Dennie would give anyone the shirt off his back. He was always ready to lend a hand, and if you knew him, you loved him. He lived a life rooted in faith, and his love for the Lord was evident in everything he did. We find comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, surrounded by the love of the Lord, and that we will see him again one day. His legacy will live on through his loving family, friends, and the community of Graham, where he made an indelible impact.
Survivors include: wife, Debbie Covey of Graham; daughters, Dana Strong and husband, Larry of Olney and Dennette Cate and husband, Michael of Van Alstyne; sisters, Ritha Joy Elliott of Lubbock and Gayla Cox of Lubbock; 6 grandchildren, Larry Strong Jr. (wife Ashley), Devin Strong (wife Kristen), Rhett Covey, Clayton Merkins, Douglas Cate and Denny Whitt Cate and 2 great grandchildren Jayden Strong and Easton Strong.
He was preceded in death by brothers, James Covey, Ricky Covey, Scotty Covey, and Forrest Covey and sisters, Barbara Parker, Margaret Mantooth, Patsy Davis, and Luella Covey.
Visitation will be held Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
