Donald Edwin Sims, 83, of Lake Graham, loving husband, father, grandfather, and uncle passed away peacefully in his sleep on Saturday, February 19, 2011 at his home. A graveside service will be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. in Murray Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Don was born on June 15, 1927 in Breckenridge to Cloma Lee and Ruby Lee (Alvey) Sims. Don graduated from high school in Woodson, Texas and attended Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas. He entered the Army at the close of World War II. After his honorable discharge he married his high school sweetheart Nancy Lee Carmack on August 1947 in Stamford, Texas. They enjoyed almost 64 years of wedded bliss. Don was employed by Humble Oil Company, which later became Exxon and retired in 1985 as a Technical Engineer in New Orleans, LA after 35 years of service. As one of his career highlights he accepted an assignment in Alaska to the North Slope pipeline project for one year in Alaska. He and Nancy lived in several Texas towns in west Texas including Merkel, Rule, and Stamford. He and Nancy moved to Lake Graham in 1984 when he retired and have resided there at the time of his death. He was a World War II veteran and a lifetime Mason.
He was a gentle and humorous man who especially liked gardening and tending to his fruit trees. He liked to fish and he worked hard at anything he did.
He was preceded in death by his parents Cloma and Ruby Sims, daughter, Nancy Kay Cowel, brother, Wayne Sims, and sister Leman Gardner.
Survivors include: wife, Nancy Sims of Graham; sons, Donald Scott Sims and Carol Green of Arlington and Kerry Wayne Sims and wife Sharon of Dallas; two granddaughters, two grandsons and several great-grandchildren; an extended family of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
