Mr. Schlittler was born Sept. 22, 1923, in Graham, Texas, to the late Elizabeth Helen (Johnson) and Henry Wesley Schlittler Jr. in Graham. He graduated from Graham High School and Texas A&M University with a degree in farm and ranch management. He served in WWII in the U.S. Army from 1942-45 in North Africa and Italy. He and Colene Gahagan married on March 16, 1945. She preceded him in death on January 20, 2008. He worked as an assistant county agent in Cooke County for two years before returning to Murray to ranch and farm. He loved the land, cattle and ranching with a passion. He also was a third-generation rural mail carrier until a stroke forced early retirement in 1977. He continued ranching until the day he died.
Dub was put on a horse before he could walk and spent the first 18 years of his life in the saddle. He was devoted to Texas A&M and always teared up when he heard the Aggie War Hymn. He loved nature and outdoor hobbies like fishing, hiking, and hunting which he passed on to his children and grandsons. He had a jolly personality and a constant supply of funny stories and sayings. He was an honest man who loved the simple things of life.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Wesley Gene Schlittler.
