Dura Vowell McCool, 101, passed away in on June 19,2013, in Graham, Texas. Services will be held at Eastside Church of Christ in Graham on June 21, 2013, at 11:00 AM with Dale Scott and Royce Priddy officiating. Interment will be at the Nocona Cemetery at 3:00 PM. Services are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home of Graham, Texas.
Dura was born on January, 5, 1912, near Duncan, Oklahoma to William Edward Vowell and Bettie Ann Harvey Vowell. At age three, she moved with her family to Texas in a covered wagon. The family settled on a farm in the Lone Prairie Community near Nocona, Texas. She married Gettes McCool on December, 27, 1931, in Waurika, Oklahoma. Together they raised two children, Donnie Ray and Freda Gayle, both of Graham,Texas. Gettes preceded her in death on December 9, 1982. Dura resided in Nocona until 2005 when she moved to Graham to be near her children.
Dura attended school a one room school in the Lone Prairie Community through the eighth grade. She graduated from Nocona High School in 1929 as valedictorian of her class. She attended Oklahoma Woman's College in Chickasha, Oklahoma. She then taught school at the Lone Prairie School she had attended as a child. After her children were older, she worked as receptionist for the Major Clinic Hospital in Nocona , retiring after twenty-three years of service. After retirement, she helped Gettes in his feed business along with many other projects.
Dura was a member of the Church of Christ where she taught the high school girls Sunday School class for many years. After retirement, she taught the weekly Ladies Bible Class.
She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and her four siblings: Dona Lewis, Auda Bourland, Obie Vowell, and Nona Priddy.
She is survived by her daughter, Freda Brown and husband Bobby and son, Donnie McCool and wife Reba all of Graham; five grandchildren-Darrell Brown and wife Sandra of Granbury, Texas; Diane Ivy and husband Randy of Hale Center, Texas; Melanie Brown of Abilene, Texas; Bobby McCool and wife Jami of Woodsboro, Texas; and Larry McCool and wife Lisa of Graham, Texas; ten great-grandchildren-Brittany Carter, Brad Ivy, Brennan Ivy, Nicole Brown, Danielle Brown, Pecos McCool, Brady McCool, Larissa McCool, Kaitlin McCool and Kayse McCool, and one great-great grandson, Cooper Carter.
Memorials may be made to the charity of choice.
Family visitation will be on June 20, 2013 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
