Edd Carpenter Workman

Edd Carpenter Workman, 91, passed away Wednesday, September 18, 2024 at his home on Possum Kingdom Lake. Visitation will be held Tuesday, September 24, 2024 at 11 a.m. in the Young County Arena and a celebration of life will follow at 1 p.m. Burial will be at Veale Creek Cemetery in Stephens County under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home Chapel. 

Edd was born September 10, 1933 in Plainview to the late C.A. and Elsie Mae (Carpenter) Workman. Raised in Olton on a cotton farm, Edd has always had a love for animals and the outdoors. Except for the two years Edd served in the Army he has rodeoed, ranched and trained horses most of his life. 

He married Neta Rash July 9, 1955 and she preceded him in death and he married Sheila McConnell November 1, 1994 and she preceded him in death. 

In the Fall of 1958 Edd attended Lubbock Christian College for two and one-half years and from there attended Texas Tech for one year. For three consecutive years he was the NIRA All Around Champion Cowboy for the World and two times Champion Saddle Bronc Rider. He was one of the National Top Rodeo College Performers. 

In 1959 Edd created a sensation in the South Plains Rodeo Circuit by riding "Mickey Mouse" a black Brahma bull that had successfully resisted 157 consecutive attempts to ride him. 

In 1964 he was the World Champion in Bare Back Riding and Calf Roping for the CRA. In 1967 he was All Around Champion Cowboy for the Southwestern Rodeo Association. 

In 1975 he received his RCA card. He has had the honor to travel and participate in many Rodeos such as the Calgary Stampede, Cheyenne Frontier Days, Pendleton Round-Up, Cow Palace in San Francisco, Kansas City, Houston, Fort Worth, and many more. At the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1976 Edd set a world record in the calf roping for the most money won at one Rodeo, he also won the Calf Roping at the Cow Palace. He ended up third in the world in calf roping at the National Final Rodeo in Oklahoma City in 1976. In 1978 he was South Texas Champion Steer Tripper. 

Edd participated in six NRA Rodeos in one year and took top honors in five of them. He trained 5 roping horses and two bulldogging horses that were named Horse of the Year in the RCA. Edd rode bulls for fifteen years, saddle bronc and bareback horses for seventeen years, bulldogged for twenty-five years and still ropes a few calves. 

Workman used to work all five events Bareback Riding, Calf Roping, Saddle Bronc, Steer Wrestling, and Bull Riding at one time. Edd was Open to the World in five events and never had a challenger. With an expert hand in training he has helped train five young cowboys that went on to be "Rookie of the Year". 

After 500 belt buckles and 350 saddles Edd stopped counting. He won his last saddle at 80 years old, The Century Break away roping at the Cowboy Reunion in Stamford, Texas. Edd loved his life training horses, helping kids learn to rope, and his family. 

Survivors include: son, Joe Edd Workman, daughter, Melinda Harvey, son-in-law, Sean Harvey all of Mineral Wells, brother, Don Workman of Lubbock and numerous nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by a sister, Wanda Lewis.
