Edgar Jones

Edgar Jones, 87, passed away Saturday, March 12, 2011 in Graham. A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Reverend Charles West of Breckenridge officiating. Edgar will be laid to rest in Pioneer Cemetery prior to the Memorial service. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

Edgar was born February 17, 1924 in Rotan, Texas to the late Charlie and Jettie (Smith) Jones. He graduated from Hardin-Simmons University and Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Edgar married his teenage sweetheart, Melva Gruben on December 3, 1944 in Rotan. He served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Tennessee during World War II. After returning to Rotan, Edgar farmed for two years before responding to God's call to Christian Ministry in 1947. In his 60 years of ministry he pastored churches in Ballinger, Winters, Quanah, Throckmorton, Grand Prairie, Breckenridge, and Perryton. He was the Director of Missions for the North Texas Baptist Association composed of 120 Southern Baptist churches in thirteen counties. Edgar moved to Graham in 1980 and became Pastoral Care Minister of Senior Adults with First Baptist Church Graham. He also served many benevolent and charitable ministries in the Graham area.

Survivors include; wife, Melva Jones of Graham; daughter, Sharon Scariano and husband Dick of Grand Junction, CO.; son, Don Jones and wife Ava of Graham; nine grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild; sister, Ordra Smith of Roscoe; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Edgar was preceded in death by a son, Terry Jones, granddaughter, Christi Thornton, two sisters, Juanita Patterson and Lucille Hammond, two brothers, Charlie Jones and Lee Jones.
