George Dennis Newton

Dennis Newton, 80, passed away Saturday, August 30, 2014 at his home in Graham. A Memorial service will be held Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

Dennis was born September 22, 1933 in Graham to the late George Henry Newton and Jeannette Crawford Newton. He entered Texas A&M University in 1951 where he majored in business and was a member of the Aggie Corps of Cadets. Later he transferred to Bradley University where he majored in Jewelry Store Management and was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. In 1954, after his father's death, he took over management of the family business, Newton's Jewelers. He was a fourth generation jeweler. The firm was founded in 1875 in Forney, Texas by Dennis's great grandfather. The firm moved to Waxahachie around the turn of the Century and in 1928 Dennis's father opened the store in Graham in the old Driver Hotel.

Dennis married Emily Jane Hejl, August 7, 1965 in Seymour, Texas. The couple settled at Lake Graham where they began raising their family. Dennis loved the lake, watching his children grow to maturity in a natural setting pleased him very much. He loved gardening, orchid culture, model building, golf, and raising lots of little animals.

He loved Graham where he served as President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Rotary Club, President of the Graham Country Club, board of directors at Graham Savings and Loan and numerous other boards and committees in the community. Dennis was a member of First Presbyterian Church where served as deacon, elder, choir member and handy man leader.

Survivors include; wife, Emily Newton of Graham; daughter, Amy Leavy and husband Ryan of Dallas; son, Dennis Newton, Jr. and wife Kristina of Brenham; three grandchildren, Jack, Mary Claire, and Hudson Leavy; sisters, Judy Bergfalk and husband Jerry of Minneapolis, MN. and Jeanne Haynes and husband Don of Glen Rose; several nieces and nephews also survive.
