Glenda June Jones

Glenda June Jones, 88, went to be with her Lord Jesus on March 13, 2025. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 2 p.m. in the Morrison Funeral Home Chapel.

Glenda was born to the late William Montgomery and Dot (Waller) Sowers on July 26, 1936, in Graham, Texas. She attended Newcastle High School where she was a cheerleader and participated in the 4H Club. It was at a Newcastle football game that she met her future husband who had just returned from the Air Force, Herman Jones.

Herman and Glenda wed in 1954 and settled for a few years in Graham before Herman’s job took the family throughout New Mexico, Texas, Illinois, Kansas and back to Texas (Houston) in 1967.

After returning to Houston, Herman was diagnosed with Crohn's disease, and in those days, there weren't many effective treatment options. Because of the uncertainty of Herman’s future, Glenda decided to go to college and get a degree in her early 30s. The journey would take over a decade to complete, all while raising three boys and caring for her husband. Starting with night classes in downtown Houston and finishing with 120-mile daily commutes to Huntsville, she graduated cum laude from Sam Houston State University with a degree in biology. She then went on to teach high school geology, biology and marine biology at Cypress Creek High School in Houston for 10 years. In fact, she developed much of the marine biology curriculum still used today in the Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District.

During this period of her life, in addition to teaching, Glenda used her talents as a seamstress to create amazing tapestry banners that her church used year after year for Christmas pageants. Other churches began to request these custom banners as well, and Glenda created a small business to meet the demand.

Although she spent over 30 years in Houston, Glenda's heart was always in Graham. She loved the community and considered it home. She attended many of her Newcastle High School reunions over the years and was able to finally move back in 1998 when she and Herman purchased a home on Lake Graham. They joined First Baptist Church of Graham, and for 15 years they reconnected with old friends while Glenda sang in the choir and Herman served as a deacon.

Glenda had a strong desire for mission work and participated in multiple mission trips to South America, Europe and Asia. Other than Graham, her next favorite place was Galveston, where she took many of her marine biology students on field trips as a teacher.

After Herman passed, Glenda moved back to Houston in 2013 and rejoined Champion Forest Baptist Church. She moved into an independent living facility and set up an art studio in her spare bedroom. A talented artist, Glenda created many oil paintings that hang in people’s homes today. She taught art classes to other seniors and even organized an annual art show in her facility’s lobby to display her students’ work so their family and friends could enjoy it. Even after moving to a memory care facility in 2023, she continued to instruct art for residents.

Glenda also loved music of all kinds. She played piano by ear and her home was always filled with music—a memory her children cherish. There was never a day they would come home from school and not hear the likes of Glenn Campbell, Andy Williams or Herb Albert and the Tijuana Brass playing on the stereo. She sang in her church choir for decades and led elementary and middle school church choirs as well. She also loved teaching her students popular songs that had a positive message.

We thank the Lord for lending Glenda to us for 88 years. She poured love and light into every room she entered, and we were all blessed to have known her.
