Gwendolyn Griffitts Woodard, 84, of Graham, Texas passed away Sunday, August 10, 2014 in Graham. Funeral is scheduled Thursday, August 14, 2014 at 10:00 a.m. the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Graceland Cemetery in Jermyn, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Gwen was born May 3, 1930 in Wichita Falls, Texas to the late Loyd and Alma (Manley) Griffitts. Her mother, Alma, passed away when she was seven years old, and she was raised by her step-mother Fannie Moore Griffitts who nurtured her and, with her father, encouraged her in her Christian life. She was an active member of First Baptist Church for the past twenty three years where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was active Woman's Missionary Union.
She was an honor graduate of Hardin Simmons University where she was a member of sigma Tau Delta, emcee of the Cowgirl Band, and social chairman of the Baptist Student Union. It was there that she met her husband, Alfred V. Woodard to whom she was married for sixty three years.
Together, they have been lifetime supporters of HSU. Both have served on the Board of Development there. They maintain the Alfred V. and Gwendolyn G. Woodard Endowed Scholarship.
She is preceded in death by her parents and her step-mother and mentor Fannie Moore Griffitts.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. Alfred Woodard of Graham; three children, Kyle Woodard and wife Angie of Rowlett, Claire Ward and husband Jack of Philadelphia, PA, Candace Moseley and husband Chris of Springtown; brother, Keith Griffitts and wife Cherry of Plano; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive.
Family Visitation will be Wednesday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home.
