Iona Wingard Lafferty Newman, 98, resident of Graham for 70 years, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2015 in Graham. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in Morrison Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Iona was born September 18, 1916 in Fleetwood, OK to the late Floyd & Fannie Ann (Estes) Cantrell. She was a salesclerk and Buyer for Morrison’s Department Store. She was a charter member of the Woman’s Club, The Lake Country China Club, Member of the Garden Club having served as president one year, and a member of the Eastside Church of Christ for 55 years. She loved her church, ladies class, and Iona was known for enjoying a hand of bridge with her friends. Iona loved her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include: son, Floyd Gilbert and wife, Gerene of Arlington; four grandchildren, Bob Wingard and Vicki Poulos of Arlington, Jennifer Stubblefield of Columbia, MO and Angela McBride of Harrisburg, MO; seven great grandchildren, Chris, Brett and Derrick Poulos of Arlington, Amy and Emily Wingard of Houston, Conner and Audrey McBride of Missouri; step-son, Kelly C. Newman of North Richland Hills.
She was preceded in death by husbands, C.W. Wingard, the father of her children, Joe Lafferty, and Kelly C. Newman, daughter, Carol Ann Wingard, step-daughter, Nita Newman, and sisters, Edith Bertram and Imogene Jeffcoat.
Family visitation will be held Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
