James Gordon Brown

James Gordon Brown went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, May 27, 2014 in Graham. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. in Faith Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

He was born on January 6, 1921 to William R. and Bessie Brooks Brown and was raised in the Tonk Valley community. Gordon volunteered for the U.S. Navy in 1940. He served on the battleship U.S.S. West Virginia and was a Pearl Harbor survivor. The West Virginia was sunk at Pearl Harbor when the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941. He was transferred to the U.S.S. Minniapolis, a heavy cruiser. At the end of WW II the U.S.S. Minniapolis boasted 18 battle stars. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946. He returned to Tonk Valley and married Luella Daves on April 11, 1947. She preceded him in death on November 26, 1981. Gordon was a charter and lifetime member of Faith Baptist Church where he served as deacon and song leader for many years. He married Ona Faye Goree on December 28, 1992. She preceded him in death on August 12, 2012.

He is survived by his 4 children, Teresa Brown Martin of Joshua, Larry Gordon Brown and wife, Marinda, Edith Rickels and husband, Bud, and Charles Brown and wife, Laura all of Graham; grandchildren, Dustin Collins and wife, Julie, Whitney Monk and husband, Jason, Katie Robinson and husband Jason, Rachel Werner and husband Lon, Jennifer Balvantin and husband Oscar, Kendall Brown and wife, Amber and 10 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Also surviving are sister, Ina Dell Burkett and brothers, Dalton Brown and wife, Faye and Kenneth Brown all of Graham.
