Janie grew up in San Antonio, attended Wilshire Elementary and MacArthur High before graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1967. She attended SW Texas University (now Texas State University) and pledged Chi Omega Sorority but left school in 1970 to become a Northwest Airlines Flight Attendant. After that adventure she returned to college, graduating Cum Laude from Texas A & I (now Texas A & M - Kingsville) in 1985 with a BS in Elementary Education with ESL Certification. Subsequently she taught school in Bryan, Galveston, Stafford and Houston. At age 50 she earned her JD degree from St. Mary's Law School in San Antonio. After working in a Houston law firm for several years, Janie realized her true passion was teaching. Her reentry into teaching put her in prison, that is, she was hired by the state to teach enmates at the Price Daniel Unit in Snyder. A few years later Janie was able to transfer to the Walker Sayle Unit in Breckenridge and took up residence in Graham where she would be closer to her sister Nancy and family. While teaching in the Walker Sayle Unit Janie received many letters of gratitude from her student-inmates praising the positive influence she was on their lives. Janie was further honored by the Texas Legislature and Texas Prison Administration for having the distinction of producing the highest percentage of GED graduates in the state.
