Joe Garvey, 80, passed away Tuesday, May 15, 2012 in Young County. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 18, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Farmer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

Joe was born on February 5, 1932 in Farmer to the late Earl and Josephine (Gegg) Garvey. He graduated from Graham High School in 1949 and was a member of Hardin Simmons University Cowboy Band and played the clarinet from 1949 to 1953. Joe received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from HSU in 1953 and entered the United States Army at Ft. Bliss in El Paso and Fort Sill in Lawton, OK from 1954 to 1956. He attended University of Texas and received a Masters of Education Degree from HSU in 1958. He married Myrl Hawkins in 1959 and she preceded him in death on August 16, 2011. Joe was a 6th grade teacher at Crestview Elementary School in Graham from 1959 to 1966, District IX Principals Association President from 1962 to 1963, Crestview Elementary School Principal from 1966 to 1969, State Texas Elementary Principals and Supervisors Association Board Director from 1962 to 1963, and Woodland Elementary School Principal from 1969 to 1992. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he was Sunday School Director for 13 years, Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and a Choir Member. Joe received ASCD Award from the Texas Board of Directors of Development Leadership and Quality in Education in 1989. He was a member of HSU Development Board from 1994 to 1996, HSU Board of Trustee from 1996 to 2005, HSU Athletic Board Chairman from 1997 to 2005, HSU Board of Development in 2006, and past Board Member of Jean Community Center. Joe was a Cattle Rancher and Investor.

Survivors include: son, Joe Dale Garvey, Jr. and wife, Sarah of Wichita Falls; grandchildren, Christin Garvey, Christal Garvey, Brett Dearman, and Bailey Dearman all of Wichita Falls; sister, Gladys Garvey McGlothin of Graham and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
