John R. McCarnes, 69, of Houston, Texas passed away on Monday, August 17, 2009. He was born March 20, 1940 in South Bend, Indiana to Robert and Minnie (Prather) McCarnes. After graduating from University of Oklahoma and serving in the Army, John came to Houston and worked in several architectural firms, where he met and married Marilyn Wright in 1973. John was an active member of Houston's First Baptist Church where he was a volunteer instructor in the fitness center. During the 1980's, John started his own architectural firm. At the age of 46, he suffered from a heart attack and a major brain stem stroke, which left him with severe mental and physical disabilities. The last 23 years of John's life, he resided at a local nursing home. He was faithfully visited by his wife, Marilyn. They enjoyed long drives on back country roads or sitting by Galveston Bay watching the boats and birds go by.
He was preceded in death by his father, Robert McCarnes.
John is survived by his loving wife of 36 years, Marilyn (Wright) McCarnes of Houston, Texas; mother, Minnie (Prather) McCarnes of Bloomington, Indiana; sister, Kathy McCarnes of Bloomington, Indiana; and niece, Maggie Hartenfeld of Bloomington, Indiana.
