Lela Mae Davis, 98, passed away on Wednesday, May 26, 2010 in Graham. Funeral services will be held on Monday, May 31, 2010 at 1:30 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Reverend Richard Segars officiating. Burial will follow in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Lela Mae was born on May 30, 1911 in Hood County, Texas to George L and Lula Kelley. She had one brother, Hamill, who was four years older. She attended the same one room school house as her parents. Her mother died when Lela was three years old. She moved to Delhi, Oklahoma when she was nine years old, staying there till she reached her teens. Her father remarried and Lela has two half-sisters, Virginia Galloway and Peggy Williams. Lela moved to live with her Uncle Will and her Aunt Lela Parkinson in Graham. She graduated from Mars Hill College in North Carolina and attended graduate school at Mary Hardin Baylor College. She met and married Jack Lewis Davis before finishing graduate school. They were married September 17, 1942 in Olney. Lela worked at Chance Vaught Aircraft as a "Rosie the Riveter" during WWII. Jack worked as a driller and Lela worked as bookkeeper for several businesses. Most of their married life, Jack and Lela lived in Graham, with a ten year hiatus serving as dorm parents at Dallas County Boys Home where they modeled Christian family life to those troubled boys, many of whom kept in touch over the years. Lela also owned and operated "The Book Nook." She was a member of First Baptist Church over 70 years. She was a real prayer warrior and she worked in the nursery, taught 13 & 14 year old girls Sunday Schoolclass, and later older girls and worked in women's organizations of the church. She loved working in her yard and shared pretty flowers with the sick and shut-ins.
She is survived by two daughters, June Hathcock of Graham and Patsy Roberts of Lawton, Oklahoma; four grandchildren, Olivia Blankenship of Amarillo, James Lewis Hathcock and wife, Sharyn of Lakeside, Arizona, Dr. Vicki Roberts and husband Edward Lawrence Sullivan of Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and Patrick Dale Roberts of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; five great grandchildren, Julie Blankenship-Clarke and husband Jeff of Amarillo, Sheryl Nix and husband, Maj. Chris Nix of Ft. Wainwright, Alaska, Jeremy Hathcock and wife, Amy of Phoenix, Arizona, Ian Hathcock and wife, Tracy of Lakeside, Arizona, and Olivia Smith and husband, James of Phoenix, Arizona; nine great-great grandchildren; two nieces, Bobbie and Joyce; nephew, Bobby Jack Johnson and wife, Wanda of Graham; life-long heart-friend, Ethel Shelton, dear friends, Brenda Weems and Georgia Holland and precious caring to the end friends, Bobbie and Richard Ligon, Mary Jo and Bobby Williams, and Sandy and Don Williams.
She was preceded in death by her parents, beloved husband Jack, brother, Hamill, grandson, Jason Hathcock, son-in-law, James Hathcock and niece, Georgia Parrish.
