Louis Pitcock, Jr

Louis Pitcock, Jr., 88 of Graham, passed away Friday, March 22, 2013 in Dallas. Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. in the First United Methodist Church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Louis was born in Fort Worth, on June 18, 1924, the son of Louis and Medora Shepherd Pitcock. After graduating from Graham High School he attended North Texas University in Denton before transferring to Southwestern University at Georgetown, Texas where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Government in 1949.
Among his activities at Southwestern University, he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity and chairman of the Panhellenic Council. He has continued his commitment to Southwestern and Phi Delta Theta and has served as a member of the President's Council, the Phi Delta Theta Century club and the Educational Foundation. In 1990 he was named Distinguished Alumnus of the Year at the Texas Gamma Chapter of Phi Delta Theta. He is a member of the 50+ Southwestern Alumni Association.
During WWII, Louis served in the Intelligence Section of the United States Air Force Strategic Air Command of Southeast Asia in India and China. He was stationed in the China-Burma-India Theater in New Delhi and Calcutta, India and in Chungking, China.
On June 29, 1949, Louis was married to Mary Ellen McFarlane in Washington, D.C. They dated while attending Graham High School and later while she attended Texas Womens University at Denton where she received both her Bachelors Degree and Masters Degree. After Washington, they then returned to Graham where they have made their home since. They are the parents of Ellen Pitcock Morris, ,whose husband is Charles F. Morris; Louis Pitcock, III whose wife is the former Meredith R. Carb, and Thomas Carl Pitcock. They have five grandchildren Mary and husband Alex Heartfield, of Graham, Amanda and husband Eric Wells of Watagua, Justin and wife Kallie Pitcock, of San Diego, CA, Dalton and wife Gabby Pitcock of Caddo, TX, Meredith Ann Pitcock of Dallas, TX, and (9) great-grand children.
Louis is associated in the family businesses, Pitcock, Inc., founded by his father, Louis Pitcock, Sr., and sons, Louis Jr., J. Duff, and Roy, in 1954. Louis Jr., his brothers, sons and nephews actively continue the businesses which have interests in oil & gas development and production, ranching, and real estate. He has served on the boards of the West Central Texas Oil & Gas Association, the North Texas Oil & Gas Association, and IPAA. He is a member of the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers.
Louis was active in the Rotary Club of Graham. He served on the Board of Directors, as President, Secretary, and club bulletin editor. He was Rotary District 5790 Governor 1984-85 and served on several Zone Committees. In 1986, he led a Rotary Foundation Group Study Exchange Team to India.
A lifelong Methodist, he is a member of the First United Methodist Church of Graham, where he served as Sunday School Teacher, Youth Director, Church Lay Leader, Chair of the Pastor-Parish Personnel Committee, a member of the Administrative Board, and a delegate to the Central Texas Annual Conference for several years. He served as District Lay Leader and on various District Committees. In 1980 and 1984, he served as a Central Texas Annual Conference delegate to the General Conferences in Indianapolis and Baltimore and South Central Jurisdictional Conferences in Little Rock and Lubbock. He served on the Board of Trustees of the Methodist Children's Home in Waco, and on the Board of Trustees of Aldersgate Enrichment Center in Brownwood.
In civic endeavors, Louis served several terms on the Board of Directors of the Graham Chamber of Commerce. He helped write the ordinance that established the Board of Higher Education Commission of the City of Graham, having served a number of years as chairman of the Graham Community Committee that worked with area colleges and universities to provide post-high school academic and vocational courses for local citizens. He served as Chairman of the Graham Public Library for 20 years, and was a member of the first Graham Planning and Zoning Commission, Chairman of the Graham United Way and Graham Area Day Care Center. During the six years on the Board of Regents of Midwestern State University (1968-1974), he served as Chairman two years.
For 30 years, Louis served on the Young County Democratic Executive Committee and was County Chairman for 12 years. He was a delegate to a number of state conventions. He is listed in Who's Who in Politics and Who's Who in the South. In addition to his commitment to his family, business, church and community, Louis had special interests in the political processes at state and national levels and recently traveled to Austin with the You Lead group for City of Graham Day. He had deep interests in education, particularly higher education and FUMC Preschool. He loved to travel and, along with Mary, took a trip around the world in 2007.
Louis was preceded in death by his parents and brother, J. Duff Pitcock.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church 3rd Generation Fund, Rotary Foundation, NCTC Pitcock Scholarship Fund, or a charity of choice.
The family will receive friends Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
