Martha Rachel Griffin Barrett, 89, passed away Friday, November 13, 2009 in Graham. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church with Rev. James C. Hill of Graham and Rev. G.I. Norris of San Angelo officiating. Burial will follow in Red Top Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Rachel was born on October 4, 1920 to Joseph Franklin Griffin and Haney Cooper Carthen Griffin in Gainesville, Texas. She graduated from Gainesville High School. She attended Decatur Baptist College and Howard Payne College. She received her Master's Degree from TWU. While at Decatur Baptist College, she met and married Johnny W. Barrett. They were married for sixty-five years. She was a dedicated pastor's wife as she supported Johnny in his different ministries across Texas. Rachel retired from teaching after twenty-eight years in education and she was a member of the First Baptist Church in Graham.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brothers, J.C. Johnson and Homer Griffin.
Rachel is survived by three sons, Johnny Mike Barrett and wife Sylvia of McKinney, Billy Jack Barrett and wife Anne of Peyton, Colorado, and David Barrett and wife Irma of Graham; two daughters, Jana Ruth Golightly and husband Jack of Gardena, California and Rachel Ann Hearne and husband Jerry of Newcastle; two brothers, Dr. Roy Joe Griffin and wife JoAnn of Melbourne, Arkansas and Jack C. Griffin and wife Sarah of Wetumpka, Alabama; two sisters, Ruth Barron of Corsicana and Axilda Chamberlain and husband Jim of Vancouver, Washington; sister-in-laws, Opal Barrett of Graham and Louise Brooks of Azle; twenty-six grandchildren, forty-seven great-grandchildren, and nineteen great great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
