Mary Kathryn Herring was born on August 17, 1911 to Alvin Balous and Willa Elizabeth (Davis) Herring in Rush Springs, Oklahoma. She attended school in Wynnewood, Oklahoma and graduated from Waurika High School in 1929. Mary continued her studies at Oklahoma Women's College and earned her Bachelor of Science in Education in 1932. She was certified to teach English, Reading and Spanish to Junior High students. She started her career as a teacher in Sugden, Oklahoma. She also taught in the communities of Meeker and Drumright. While teaching in Sand Springs, Mary was encouraged to pursue a masters degree by her principal. In 1956, she received her Masters of Education from The University of Oklahoma. After receiving her degree, Mary continued her career in Tulsa as a reading teacher for special needs children. Mary retired from teaching in 1976. She taught in the Oklahoma school system for over 43 years and touched the lives of numerous children during that time.
Mary had a love for reading, knitting, playing games, and fishing. In her spare time, you could find her swimming laps at the YMCA in Tulsa, traveling across America, and spending time with her friends and family. In 2007, Mary moved to Horizon Bay Retirement Home in Graham, Texas to be closer to family. During her time there, she thoroughly enjoyed playing bingo and playing spinner with her friends, Polly Donnell, Dottie Bryant, Adeline Diersing, Lucetta Harbison, and Iona Neuman. At family gatherings, Mary was always the instigator for a friendly, but competitive game of chicken foot. She was loved by all that knew her, and she will be greatly missed.
