Max Roberts, Jr.

Max Reed Roberts, Jr., 82, passed away Saturday, May 23, 2015 at his home in Graham.  A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 26, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church.  Visitation will be Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home.  Graveside service will be held prior to the memorial service at 10:30 a.m. in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.

 

Max was born May 3, 1933 to Max and Josephine Roberts in Graham.  He married Betty Ruth Atwood, November 7, 1952.  He graduated from Graham High School in 1950 and Texas Tech University in 1954 with a degree in Industrial Engineering.  He was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity and Alpha Pi Mu Industrial Engineering Honor Society.

 

After graduating he went to work for The Western Company in Odessa.  In 1955, he was called to serve his Country in the United States Army and served in the 3rd Armored Division in Fort Knox, KY and Glenhausen, Germany.  After serving his country he returned to Graham to join his father in business.  After his father's death he continued to run Max Roberts Welding and Machine and was joined by his son in 1977 who continues to run the family business begun in 1947.

 

Max was a devoted husband and loving father who will be remembered for his quick wit and sense of humor.  He loved Graham and served on many boards and committees including serving on the Graham Chamber of Commerce, serving as an alderman to the Graham City Council, and serving on the City Planning and Zoning Board and the Graham Hospital Board.

 

Especially dear to him was his time spent as Scout Master to Troop 92 where he loved taking his scouts camping and to Worth Ranch.  He was also proud to have been an active member of the Graham Rotary Club for 55 years serving as its President and on many committees.

 

He was a member of the First United Methodist Church where he served as President of the Board of Administration.

 

He and his wife Betty enjoyed ranching and spending time outdoors.  He had a lifelong love of engineering that continued to his death.

 

Mr. Roberts is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty and by son Max Roberts, III and wife Becky of Graham and daughter, Charis Nees and husband William of Humble; grandchildren, Victor Johnson, Jr. of New York, NY, Vanessa Cox and husband Ryan of Katy, Mary Roberts of Lubbock, Anna Rogers and husband William of Fort Worth, Alex Nees of Conroe and Marideth Nees of Webster.  He is also survived by four great-granddaughters.
