Nathan J. Allen, Jr. passed away Sunday, January 13, 2013 at his home in Young County. He was born June 3, 1921 in Glasscock County to Nathan and Ruth Carter Allen. He graduated from Garden City High School and attended Texas Technological College before joining the Army and serving in World War II, primarily in the Philippines.
After the war he returned to Texas Tech and received a degree in Animal Husbandry in 1947. Following graduation he worked for the USDA as a wool grader before returning to Tech to teach in the Ag Department. It was there he met Jacque Donnell and they were married in Eliasville in 1953.
Following a stint as a field man for the Texas Hereford Association in Fort Worth, Nathan, Jacque and their son Jeff moved to a ranch north of Clayton, NM. After four and a half years they returned to Young County and made their home in the Murray community.
Nathan was a member of the Murray Volunteer Fire Dept., former president of the Young County Volunteer Fire Dept. and former Chair of the Young Soil and Water Conservation District. He was a member and had served as a Deacon and Elder in the First Presbyterian Church in Graham.
He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 sisters and his wife Jacque. He is survived by his son Jeff and his wife Ellen of Graham, grandchildren Thomas and wife Tara of Houston, Travis and wife Sydne of Greenwood, MS, and Emily of Dallas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday January 15, at First Presbyterian Church, Graham at 2:00 pm. Typical of his desire to further education and be of service to others, Nathan requested that his body be donated for research. Arrangements have been made with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, School of Medicine in Lubbock.
