Pauline Guinn Jones, 92, passed away Saturday, November 8, 2008 in Graham. Graveside services will be held Thursday, November 13, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. in Pioneer Cemetery with Dr. Bob Holloway, pastor of First United Methodist Church, officiating. A memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church in Graham. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Pauline was born May 24, 1916 in Rusk, Texas, daughter of Paul and Lucy Guinn. She was the oldest of 5 sisters. She grew up in East Texas and graduated from Cushing High School where she was valedictorian. She attended Stephen F. Austin College in Nacogdoches graduating in 1937 with a B.S in math and science education with high honors. Her first teaching position was in Morton, Texas where she taught high school math. She met Mark E. Jones, Jr. there and they were married in 1938. Pauline continued teaching in various places in Texas and during WWII she worked at North American Aviation in Dallas as an efficiency engineer on the P-38 project.
Following the war, the family moved to Austin where Mark completed his Pharmacy degree and by 1947 they were in Graham. Pauline began teaching at Graham High School that year and retired more than 50 years later. During her time at GHS she taught numerous subjects including algebra, typing, shorthand, business math and geometry. Later in her career she became Dean of Students and served in that capacity as well as Student Council advisor for 25 years. Her Student Council won many awards for service through the years. Her proudest accomplishment was her work as administrator of the GHS Scholarship Program where she was responsible for more than $100,000 in scholarships awarded annually. She taught several generations of GHS students and her influence is still felt. She was honored by the State of Texas as the outstanding Student Council Advisor and was named an Outstanding Educator in Texas. There is a scholarship in her name at GHS awarded annually.
She was the mother of three children, Mark III, Vanita and Hal; grandmother of Amy and Emily Cosper, Mark Jones IV, Sean and Brea Jones; great-grandmother of Sofia and Peyton Mollett. Three of her sisters are living, Louise, Dorothy and Margaret.
She was a member of the First Methodist, active in the local Republican Party and various other civic organizations. She was an extraordinary designer, seamstress and hat collector.
The famliy will receive friends on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.
