James Winfred (Red) Segars, 83, passed away Monday, October 21, 2013 in Aubrey. A graveside service will be held Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Pioneer Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in the First Baptist Church in Kermit.

James was born on March 9, 1930, in Jacksboro, Texas. He grew up in Graham where he graduated from high school in 1948. He then married the love of his life, Wanda Jo Stidham. He and his new bride moved to Wichita Falls where he began working for Bradford Tool and Supply. He later went to work for Axelson as a pump salesman. James and the family moved from Wichita Falls to Graham in 1963 to continue his work with Axelson and to open a new pump shop for the company. Following the opportunities provided to him, he transferred to Kermit, Texas to work the West Texas and Eastern New Mexico oil fields. He worked for Axelson until his retirement in 1997. James continued working in the oil field when he wanted, consulting for different companies. Throughout his years in the oil and gas industry, he gained valuable knowledge regarding subsurface pumps, including what worked and what didn't. This expertise awarded him the title of " The Pump Doctor".

James was not only devoted to his career, but to his family. James worked long hours providing for his family's needs. He wanted his children to excel, but he did not push them. He loved sports at every level. One of his greatest joys was watching his children and grandchildren participate in academic and athletic competition. He also loved John Wayne.

After retirement, James found a new calling, gathering with other men to do repairs to the church property. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kermit, and an ordained deacon. This provided him a great sense of fulfillment doing deeds that made an eternal difference. At First Baptist Church in Kermit, the man who had earlier been known as "The Pump Doctor" became known as " The Resident Handyman."

James was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis (Slick) Segars and Ethel Stoddard Segars, his wife, Wanda, and his brothers, Kenneth Segars and Harold Segars.

He is survived by his children, Richard Segars of Graham and his wife Charlotte, Jim Segars of Waco and his wife Mary, Randy Segars of Denton and his wife Pennye, Carol Surley of Brownwood and her husband Morris, and Roger Segars and his wife Stacie of Denton; one brother, Gerald Segars of Denver City. James was blessed with nine grandchildren, Marci, Jeff, Doug, Jeremy, Benjamin, Chris, Megan, Bryce, and Michael. He has five great-grandchildren, Michael, Jonathan, Maya, Kaylee, and Mark.

Visitation will be held Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church Building Fund in Kermit, P.O. Box 1105, Kermit, TX 79745.
