Rev. James "Jay" Walter Darnell Jr., 98, passed away Monday, November 26, 2012 in Graham. Funeral services will be held Monday, December 3, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in First United Methodist Church in Graham. A Committal service will follow Monday at 3:00 p.m. in Independence Chapel at Greenwood Cemetery in Fort Worth. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
Rev. Darnell was born August 10, 1914 in Chisholm, Texas to the late James Walter Darnell and Amanda Knox Darnell. He married Theda Smith in 1939 and they celebrated 60 years of marriage. She preceded him in death in 2001. He married Chloe King in 2003.
In 1956 Asbury Methodist Church sponsored the Rev. Darnell in organizing First Methodist Church in Bedford. During the next six years he earned a college degree at Texas Wesleyan University and also two years of graduate work at Perkins School of Theology. June of 1962 he was appointed minister of the First United Methodist Church at Burleson, 1968 appointed to Couts Memorial Methodist Church in Weatherford, 1971 appointed to First United Methodist Church in Graham, and 1976 appointed to Walnut Springs Memorial Church. He retired in 1980 and returned to Graham in 2001 where he served on the First United Methodist Church staff as Minister of Evangelism and Visitation. Rev. Darnell has preached sixty nine revivals and has considered himself as Evangelical (winning people to Jesus Christ). He served as District Secretary of Evangelism for 6 years, Secretary of Central Texas Conference 4 years, on the General Conference Level he served as Delegate to the Jurisdictional Conference in 1976. This work gave him the opportunity to develop seminars for supply pastors and District Secretaries of Evangelism in the cities of Chicago, IL, Oklahoma City, Ok, Nashville, TN, Mobile, AL, Pensacola, FL, Tyler, TX, Amarillo, TX, and Abilene, TX.
Survivors include: wife, Chloe King Darnell of Graham, son, Toby Darnell and wife, Rebecca of Houston
grandchildren, Shane Darnell of Manchester, NH, Ginger Sewell of Atlanta, GA, Melanie Deakins of Houston, Jennifer Diehl of Magnolia, and Karen Semana of Tomball; 9 great grandchildren; also surviving are Chloe's daughter and three sons, their children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son, Gary Darnell.
Family visitation will be held Sunday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Morrison Funeral Home.
