Stanley L. Vanhooser, DVM, at the age of 75 years, passed away on June 5, 2023.
Stanley was born in Wichita Falls, on June 7, 1947 to the late Leedy Vester and Cornelia M (Sanders) Vanhooser. He grew up in on the family farm, in Bryson, which sparked and built his love for animals, farming and animal husbandry. He graduated Bryson Highschool in 1965. He met his wife Phyllis (Thetford) Vanhooser and they were married in Graham, TX on June 3, 1967.
Stanley took his love for animal husbandry and farming to develop a long career helping others and animals. He started at Texas A&M University, receiving a BS in Dairy Science in August 1969. His studies and passion continued and he received his Doctor of Veterinarian Medicine from Texas A&M in August 1972. He had a remarkable commitment to animal husbandry and pathology which challenged him to continue his education. Throughout his career he received a Master’s in Veterinarian Medicine & Surgery in August of 1977 from Texas A&M and a Master’s in Veterinary Pathology in July 1988 from the University of TN. He then traveled to Springdale, Arkansas to work at the Arkansas State Diagnostic Lab working as a Veterinary Pathologist and then moved on to his longest tenure at Oklahoma State University in 1991. He moved back to Texas in 2004, and to Texas A&M, and worked in the Veterinary Diagnostic Lab to retirement in 2016. During his career he also developed 2 U.S. patents for supplemental feed additives for poultry feed that were proven to prevent SIDS in baby chicks. In 2019, Stanley and Phyllis moved back to Bryson, TX to live and work his last years on the farm. Even after retirement, he maintained his credentials, he continued to support poultry farmers by providing consultation and inspections of flocks.
He was a loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Phyllis, of Jacksboro; son, Stan L. Vanhooser II and wife Michelle of Huntsville, TX; daughter Shelley Vanhooser of Warden, WA; grandson, Bryan Scott Henderson and 3 great grandchildren, Malaki, Oriana and Avery; sister Helen (Vanhooser) Blakey and husband Bob Blakey and numerous relatives, colleagues and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a granddaughter, Whitney Henderson.
Visitation will be held for friends and family on Friday, June 9,2023 at Morrison Funeral Home from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM. Graveside service will follow at Cottonwood Cemetery Bryson, TX at 2:00 PM under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home.
