Vera Nell Matlock, 97, passed from this realm on Sunday, August 6, in the company of loved ones. Family will receive visitors on Wednesday evening, August 9, 6 to 8 PM at Morrison Funeral Home Chapel. A private graveside service and interment will be held the following morning at 9 AM, Cottonwood Cemetery in Jack County. Arrangements are under the direction of Morrison Funeral Home, Graham.
Born on November 8, 1925 in Montague County, TX, the first child of the late George Dewey and Lucille Lowe Harris. Vera grew up in rural Archer County's McCormick community, along with two younger siblings, the late Doris Harris Clements, and brother, Paul Everett Harris, deceased. During the war years, Vera attended North Texas State College, Denton, earning a teaching certificate and a teaching position at the Farmer Community School, in Young County.
Shortly after the War ended, she met and married Orgie L. Matlock of the West Fork Community, in rural Archer County, marrying on March 14, 1946 in Jacksboro, TX. The couple built a farm and ranching homestead in Southeast Archer County, where, over the ensuing decades, they raised a family of five children, all of whom maintain homes, and / or reside, on their parents' original homestead today. Children, in order of birth, Orgie Noble Matlock (Cathy), J. D. Matlock (Donna), Theresa Kay Matlock-Haile (Gerald), Carl L. Matlock (JoNell) and Charles W. Matlock (Gracie).
Vera was preceded in death by her parents, two siblings, one grandchild and her husband of 65 years.
Survivors include five (5) children, sister Lynell Harris Drennan (Danny) of Graham and brother Dewey Nolan Harris (Helen) of Wichita Falls,16 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and multiple step-children and step-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to express special appreciation to Elison Assisted Living and Memory Care of Graham and its staff and management for their thoughtful consideration and care of our loving and honored matriarch over the past 15 years.
Finally, Hospice of Wichita Falls is recognized for its professional services in the waning moments of our mother's life.
