Virginia Owens Street passed away April 11, 2016, in Graham. She was 100 years old. She was born in Dallas, Texas on June 14, 1915 to Jewell Montague Owens and Jno Elzy Owens. She was a graduate of The Hockaday School in Dallas, class of 1934 and she was featured by the school in 2013 as the oldest living graduate of Hockaday. Her family lived on Mockingbird Lane across the street from SMU and later on Drane Drive in Greenway Parks.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Edwin Bruce Street, whom she met at an SMU dance and married Sept 9, 1934. They moved to Graham in 1934, where they raised two children Virginia Smith of Fort Worth and Bruce Street, Jr. of Graham. She is survived by her children, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Virginia was an avid participant in outdoor sports, particularly tennis and golf. She loved her summer months at their home in Chautauqua Park, Boulder, Colorado where many lifelong friends developed. Her philanthropic input can be seen in the many community organizations she supported including Meals on Wheels, the Hospital Auxiliary, FUMC Samatarians, and the Library of Graham. Her participation and support of the Young County Family Resource Center led them to change their name to Virginia’s House in 2006.
The funeral service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Graham at 2 pm Thursday April 14,2016.
